What to buy

Pet Store Toys

So what is really necessary to buy for your brand new kitten? In all reality, the basics and a couple of cat toys is all you need. First of all, you want to make sure to purchase the right size litter box for your home and for your cat. Remember, kittens grow up fast, so don’t think small when it comes to litter box size. Also, cats have a tendency to kick their litter outside of the box. Therefore, it would be best to get a litter box with higher walls and a litter mat to catch any litter from their paws. Next, I believe every cat owner should get a Litter Genie. This not only saves you time when cleaning out your cat’s litter box, but minimizes your usage of trash bags. Plus, it also reduces the amount of odor left in the room. Trust me, you’ll love it! Now don’t forget about feeding bowls. You’ll need three. One for clean water, the second for dry food, and the third for wet food. This will simplify confusion with which bowl belongs to what food. Next up is your cat’s hygiene! You don’t want to just let your cat run feral in your home. The must have’s for hygiene are nail clippers, a cat brush, a waterless shampoo and a toothbrush and toothpaste kit. I find all of these items very important for any pet owner. For example, the brush helps your cat’s coat stay silky and soft, as well as, the waterless shampoo. Plus, if you buy a scented waterless shampoo, snuggling with your kitty is far more enjoyable. Then, dental hygiene is just as important for cats as it is for humans. The only difference is that you only need to brush a cat’s teeth every two weeks. Finally, you should never declaw your cat. No matter how much they scratch or tear up your home, there are other ways to get around this issue. First, trim their nails. This is probably one of the most challenging routines to adjust to. Your kitten most likely doesn’t enjoy it and rather keep their long claws. Once you manage to find your cat’s balance in nail trimming, make a habit of doing this about every 2 weeks. Before you leave the store, make sure to pick up a couple of cat toys. A definite purchase would be a cat tree. All cats love heights, they are animal acrobats! Also, to reduce the amount of scratching on your furniture, purchase scratching posts. Our cat has 4 scratching posts and she loves all of them. Any other toy purchases are up to you. If you like it, most likely your cat will like it too. You can find most of these products at your local Pet Store, Petsmart, Petco and even Walmart.
